Uzbekistan
- A Country Study
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/uztoc.html
This website contains the on-line version of a book previously published
in hard copy by the Library of Congress, Federal Research Division. This
country study is part of the Area Handbook Series sponsored by the U.S.
Department of Army. The library owns a print version that can be found
in the Reference Collection [call number REF DK 851 K34 1997]. The website
has been updated in 2001 since the 1997 publication of the book. The website
describes and analyzes Uzbekistan's political, economic, social, and national
security systems and institutions, and examines the interrelationships
of those systems and the ways they are shaped by historical and cultural
factors. A multidisciplinary team of social scientists writes the study.
According to the foreword: "The authors seek to provide a basic understanding
of the observed society, striving for a dynamic rather than static portrayal.
Particular attention is devoted to the people who make up the society,
their origins, dominant beliefs and values, their common interests and
the issues on which they are divided, the nature and extent of their involvement
with national institutions, and their attitudes toward each other and toward
their social system and political order. This website represents the analysis
of authors and should not be construed as an expression of an official
United States government position, policy, or decision. The authors have
sought to adhere to accepted standards of scholarly objectivity."
