Exchanges


Each stock exchange has an extensive set of standards for a company to be listed. Some of these criteria are listed below. In today's fluctuating market, these standards are subject to change.


American Stock Exchange

The American Stock Exchange has both "quantitative and qualitative standards" for a company to be listed. Among the quantitative standards for a U.S. company to be listed initially, it must have a shareholders' equity of $4 million and it must have earned $750,000 in the last fiscal year (or in two of the last three years).


NASDAQ

NASDAQ tends to emphasize technology stocks more than the other U.S. exchanges. For an initial listing, companies must have a shareholders' equity of $15 million and it must have earned $1 million in the last fiscal year (or in two of the last three years). The requirements to be listed on the NASDAQ SmallCap Market are smaller.


New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is the "largest equities marketplace in the world". In order to be listed initially, a company must have earned $2.5 million in the previous fiscal year.


Chicago Board of Trade

The Chicago Board of Trade is the "world's oldest derivative (futures and futures-options) exchange." It trades both agricultural futures and financial contracts (such as U.S. Treasury Bonds).


Tokyo Stock Exchange

Although foreign currency and some foreign companies are traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the emphasis is on Japanese companies. For initial listing, a Japanese company must have a shareholders' equity of at least 1 billion yen (approximately $8.35 million) and a two-year profit of at least 500 million yen.
