Search Help
There are three steps to searching the catalog:
Select sources
Select search type
Enter criteria to search

1. Select the sources to search:
You have one of three options to choose from:

  1. Rockhurst Library only: These periodicals are located within the library and include print, microfiche and microfilm formats.

  2. Electronic only: These periodicals are in electronic format and are available in a variety of online databases that the library has access to. The databases include:

  3. All: This serves as the search default. It includes both Rockhurst Library periodicals and electronic periodicals.

2. Select the type of search:
Select the type of search you wish to perform. There are two types of searches available:

  1. Keyword (AND): This searches your criteria as a set of keywords with left and right truncation. It automatically assumes an AND between each keyword. Do not put 'AND' between your keywords. This is done automatically. If you search for 'American Journal' you will retrieve periodicals that have 'American' and 'Journal' in the title. This is the default search.

  2. Keyword (OR): This searches your criteria as a set of keywords with left and right truncation. It automatically assumes an OR between each keyword. Do not put 'OR' between your keywords. This is done automatically. If you search for 'American Journal' you will retrieve periodicals that have 'American' or 'Journal' in the title.

  3. Exact Title: This search retrieves titles that exactly match the criteria you have entered. It is a good search to use if your periodical title is a single word (Science, Nature, America, etc.). If you retrieve no results using this search, try a keyword (AND) search using your criteria.

  4. Phrase: This searches your critera as a phrase with right truncation. This means that it will retrieve everything that begins with our criteria. For example, a phrase search for 'annual review' will retrieve all the periodicals that begin with 'annual review' (Annual Review of Biology, Annual Review of Psychology, etc.).

3. Enter criteria to search:
You enter your criteria here. Your criteria will be based on the type of search you select in step 2, but here is a list of basic tips.

Search Tips:
  1. The best search is a keyword (AND) search using two or three unique words from the title.
  2. Check your spelling.
  3. Use fewer words if you find nothing the first time.
  4. Capitalization does not matter.
  5. You do not need to put 'and' or 'or' in the search criteria for your searches unless they occur in the title.
  6. If the title has an apostrophe, you must enter the apostrophe (barron's not barrons). An alternative is to enter the term up to the apostrophe (do a keyword search for barron).
