Information Literacy
Librarians offer a variety of instruction opportunities to assist faculty with introducing their students to information literacy for their academic discipline.

The Association of College and Research Libraries provides documents to educate faculty and administrators on how to incorporate information literacy into their curriculum:

Information Literacy for Faculty and Administrators

Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education

Some of the ways librarians can assist faculty include:

  • Course Assignments pages developed specifically for the Information Literacy instruction given to a specific class
  • RockIT: Rockhurst Information Literacy Tutorial. One version which is used within WebCT offers quizzes and assessment. This is done in collaboration between the faculty and the librarian, with the librarian as instructor for RockIT. A "public" version of RockIT is also available, but it does not contain the quizzes and is not monitored by librarians.
  • Pre-Instruction, post-instruction and other surveys to assess student information skills using survey software
  • Information on designing effective library assignments can be found through the LOEX, a nonprofit educational clearinghouse for library instruction and information literacy information.
  • Research Guides and Internet Sources lists developed specifically for the needs of Rockhurst University students and faculty
  • Librarians or Evening/Weekend Supervisors available every hour the library is open to give one-on-one assistance
  • Ask-A-Librarian 24/7 online virtual reference assistance through the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Virtual Reference Project.
  • Librarians have created Research Guides and Internet Sources lists to assist patrons in identifying the key research materials available in the library collection and the best Internet sources available for free use.

More information about Information Literacy at Rockhurst University is available from the Building Information Literacy into the Curriculum web page.

Contact Kim Cullinan , Head of Public Services, for more information about instruction opportunities. Please provide at least 2 weeks advance notice for scheduling your instruction class.

Checking Out Materials From the Greenlease Library
Faculty are eligible to check out materials from the Greenlease Library and other MOBIUS libraries. For more information about this, view the Faculty and Staff Information Sheet (13KB)*.

Checking Out Materials From Other Libraries

1. MOBIUS Patron Initiated Borrowing
Rockhurst University is part of the MOBIUS consortium. Through this Missouri academic library consortium current employees and students may use their Rockhurst University ID/library card and unique campus ID number to checkout books by using the online catalog "Request" function. This is known as Patron Initiated Borrowing. Directions for employees and students * are available online.

2. MOBIUS Visiting Patron program
Rockhurst University employees * may checkout books and other materials directly from MOBIUS libraries. No additional card is needed. This is known as Visiting Patron Borrowing. The employee must have their Rockhurst University ID card and their Unique Campus ID number with them to check out materials.

3. Courtesy Card program
This program is for checkout from selected university libraries in the greater Kansas City area that are not part of the MOBIUS consortium. Read more Information about the Courtesy Card program

Any Rockhurst University employee or students checking out items from these libraries is responsible for returning the materials on time and paying any fees incurred. Replacement costs from these libraries run as high as $120 per item, in addition to overdue fees. Each library retains the right to limit what items will be checked out to Rockhurst University patrons.

4. AJCU Library Passport Card Program for Full-time Rockhurst University Faculty
Rockhurst University full-time faculty may borrow selected items from other AJCU libraries. Each library determines which materials may be checked out and faculty are responsible for any late or replacement fees. Access to electronic collections is not part of the program. Faculty must fill out a Borrower Application Form in the Greenlease Library. This form must be signed by a librarian or supervisor. More information is available on the Direct Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement document.*

If you are a visiting faculty member from another AJCU institution read the Guidelines for Visiting Faculty document.*

Faculty Student Assistants
Faculty who have student assistants may wish to submit a permissions letter to the Head of Public Services which will permit your assistant to do one or all of the following on your behalf:

  • Check out books using your library card
  • Request books from other MOBIUS libraries using your unique campus ID
  • Request books, audiotapes or journal articles on Interlibrary Loan
  • Make copies from the library periodical collection on microfiche or microfilm for charge to your department's budget.

Faculty may download a copy of the permissions letter (8KB)* and send the form to the Head of Public Services. If you need more information please call 816-501-4142.

Reserve Room
The library offers faculty the ability to place materials on reserve for use by their students. The policy for materials eligible for reserve can be found on the Policy for Placing Materials on Reserve (28KB)*. Faculty can choose to have materials on reserve in the library or available online through the electronic reserves system, Docutek ERes. All materials must meet copyright guidelines. To place material on reserve in the library use the Physical Reserve Request Form.

To identify items in the library on reserve use the Reserve Room Search option in the Online Catalog. Search by either faculty name or course name.

Electronic Reserves
Faculty may place documents on reserve for their students to access from on or off campus via the Docutek ERes electronic reserve service. To place materials on electronic reserve use the Electronic Reserve Request Form. Faculty who use WebCT can link from this course software into ERes to give their students access to course materials.

Rockhurst University shares the ERes service with Avila University and William Jewell College. Documents are password protected to restrict usage to only authorized faculty and students in a class. The Faculty FAQ (10KB)* gives a short overview of ERes.

Materials placed on ERes are subject to the same criteria as all reserve materials. Materials eligible for reserve and policies can be found on the Policy for Placing Materials on Reserve (28KB)*. Read the How to Submit Materials for Docutek Electronic Reserve (12KB)* document before requesting materials to be placed on electronic reserve. Faculty who wish to place student papers on reserve must complete the Student Papers Copyright Permission Form (5KB)*.

After the items are available in ERes it is the responsibility of the faculty member to distribute the course password to their students so that only students from their class can access the materials. There is no limit to the number of times a student may view a document. Documents can be printed directly from ERes.

Information is available to students to help them understand ERes include the Docutek Electronic Reserves Student Guide (11KB)* and the Student FAQ (9KB)*.

For more information on Docutek ERes contact the Head of Public Services by email or at 816-501-4142.

Book and Audiovisual Orders for the Library Collection
Collection development at Rockhurst is the responsibility of the department chairs. Each department does have a professional librarian as a liaison to assist faculty with book selection and collection development. The library's collection development policy describes how selection is done.

  • Each department chair is responsible for using their library materials budget, allocated by the Library Director, to build a collection which supports the curriculum taught by the department. Chairs should encourage all faculty in the department to make recommendations.
  • The librarians recommend that faculty use selection tools found in the library such as Choice magazine and professional journals in your subject area.
  • All orders for books should be submitted either by electronically using the Ordering Database or by submitting a paper Faculty Materials Request Slip.
  • All orders must be submitted to Julia Wang, Acquisitions/Serials Librarian by February 28th of each year.
  • A monthly departmental spending report is sent to the department chair by the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian.

The Acquisitions/Serials Librarian will order the title in one of the following ways:

  • Routine orders are sent to a vendor because of discounts, pre-binding, claiming, etc. Normally this takes 8-10 weeks.
  • "Rush" orders or audiovisual materials orders, are dealt with on a case-by-case basis to ensure the fastest service and arrival time.
  • If an item is determined to be out-of-print, the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian will search a variety of out-of-print resources. If the item is not found, an order is placed with Blackwell's OP Book Service. Blackwell's will keep the order active for 1 year before the order is canceled.
  • If the title cannot be ordered the form will be returned to the requester with a memo stating why it was not ordered.

Periodical Orders for the Library Collection
Periodicals for all departments are purchased out of one general periodicals budget. Within this budget an effort is made to balance the amount each department spends on periodicals so that each department is proportionately represented. Requests for new periodicals or questions about currently held periodicals should be directed to Julia Wang, Acquisitions/Serials Librarian.

Information which would be helpful includes full title of the periodical, as well as the publisher name and address. Most periodicals are purchased through a subscription agency which handles the paperwork. However, information about publisher, etc., is helpful in identifying a periodical. After ordering, new periodicals usually take between 2 -6 months for the first issue to arrive.

Final decision on what will be ordered rests with the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian. Factors involved in the decision making include the cost of the periodical, its coverage, if and where it is indexed in periodical indexes, and the number of journals a department already has on order. It is recommended that each faculty member advise their department chairperson of new periodical requests, however, this is not absolutely necessary since there is no department allocation of the money in the periodicals budget.

Complete runs of back issues of new periodicals generally are not ordered as they are usually too expensive. After the first complete year of the new periodical a decision will be made by the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian whether or not to purchase the past year on microform or to bind the paper issues.

RefWorks Bibliographic Manager Database
RefWorks is software that allows users to set up a personal account to manage citations for use in bibliographies, footnotes and parenthetical references. Many popular citation styles such as APA, MLA, ACS and others are available. Citations can be exported from databases and imported into personal folders. Citations can also be entered manually by typing in data. The Write-N-Cite plugin application can be downloaded into word processing programs so that parenthetical references can be inserted from RefWorks into the text where appropriate. Your RefWorks account can be accessed from any location.
