Students who qualify have the opportunity to
be trained and work as tutors, Supplemental Instruction
leaders, and peer writing tutors. All of
these positions are paid part-time positions.
How are tutors selected?
Students who excel academically, possess strong interpersonal communication
skills, and are recommended by their professors are considered for
positions as tutors in the Learning Center.
How are tutors trained?
Our tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and Learning
Association, a national organization. Aspiring tutors are offered the
opportunity to be certified after they have completed ten hours of
training and have performed twenty-five hours of tutoring.
Supplemental Instruction leaders are required
to attend a two-day workshop at the beginning
of the semester in which they will first serve
as SI leaders. The training covers such topics
as how students learn, instructional strategies
aimed at strengthening student academic performance,
data collection and management details.
Peer writing tutors are trained through a combination
of strategies. They meet individually with writing
assistance professionals in the Learning Center
to discuss writing theory and tutoring strategies,
observe them in tutoring sessions, and work under
the ongoing supervision of the Writing Assistance
Coordinator. |
