Mixed Media Exhibition Launches Greenlease Gallery Season
Guest curator Jeremy Mikolajczak brings together the work of Brooklyn-based artist Joy Drury Cox and the Chicago-based husband and wife collaborative artists Marilyn and Peter Frank, in an exhibition titled “text. (or in the vacancy of).” This mixed-media exhibition opens to the public Friday, Aug. 28, with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University.

Working primarily with a limited color palette and materials, in “text. (or the vacancy of)” Cox and the Franks examine the juxtaposition of text as “image and concept” and text as “image and concept through its removal.” Minimal in every aspect, their collective work questions the very definition of language and the replacement of language for image.

Cox graduated with an English degree from Emory University and in 2006 earned her master of fine arts at the University of Florida. She has exhibited her work at several New York City venues, including the Center for Book Arts, Priska C. Juschka Fine Art, John Connelly Presents, and The Drawing Center.
Marilyn and Peter Frank began their collection in New York City in 2000. Currently, they live and work in Chicago, producing sculpture, painting, video and photography. They have shown work at many galleries and institutions, including rowlandcontemporary, Devening Projects+Editions, David Weinberg Gallery, Gallery 400 at University of Illinois, Chicago, and the O’Connor Gallery at Dominican University.

Mikolajczak is currently the director of the University of Central Missouri’s Gallery of Art and Design. His previous professional experience includes assistant gallery director at Andrew Hollingsworth in Chicago, and curator of exhibitions at Studio 23/The Arts Center in Bay City, Mich. Mikolajczak holds a master of fine arts from the University of Florida (2007) and a bachelor of fine arts from West Virginia University (2002) with an emphasis on contemporary art theory and practice. He resides in Kansas City.
