Carl Capra has been the men’s and women’s golf coach at Rockhurst since the two programs were started in 1997. He has seen both programs make great strides over the past nine years.
In 1997-98, the women’s golf team qualified for the NAIA national tournament in Tulsa, Okla., where the Hawks finished 17th in the nation with a solid three-day performance.
The Hawks competed strong in the Heartland Conference from 2001-05. The men and women both finished in the top four at the 2005 Heartland Conference Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Four of Rockhurst’s golfers—two men and two women—finished in the top 15 individually at the conference tournament.
Capra has been on the athletic staff at Rockhurst for the past 22 years serving in several capacities. He was an assistant coach for the men's basketball program and was the head coach for the women's soccer team.
In 1993, Capra took over the women’s soccer program. Over the next five years, the Hawks finished 71-29-8 under Capra. His last two teams were ranked eighth and fifth in the nation while competing as an NAIA member. The Hawks won the regional title and competed in the NAIA national tournament in San Antonio, Texas, under Capra, who was named the 1997 Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
Capra attended Sacred Heart College in Wichita, Kan., where he played basketball for two years. He transferred to Rockhurst, graduating in 1970 with a B.A. in secondary education. He taught at Kansas City area high schools for 16 years. He also coached basketball, football, track and cross-country, tennis, and volleyball.
He holds a master’s degree in counseling from Central Missouri State University and a master’s degree in athletic administration from the University of Kansas.
Capra makes his home in Kansas City, Mo., with his wife, Deborah, and son, Jacob. He has another son, Chris, and two grandchildren, Chris and Tori, who live in Kansas City, Mo.
He is also the assistant athletic director in charge of NCAA compliance. |
