Women's Basketball: Hawks to receive community service award
The Rockhurst University women’s basketball team has been selected to receive the Community Service Volunteer Group Award from the Rose Brooks Center.
Rose Brooks Center is a comprehensive domestic violence agency in Kansas City that provides a full continuum of care including prevention programming, crisis intervention and other supportive services to thousands of women and children each year.
Rockhurst head coach Rebecca Morrisey and her team will be honored on the evening of April 24 at a ceremony at Bernstein-Rein Advertising, 4600 Madison Ave., in Kansas City, Mo.
"We are so honored to receive this award from Rose Brooks Center," Morrisey said. "We believe that we have gained far more than we have given and our hearts go out to the women and children served. Our players and coaches and are thankful for the support system we have to protect us from similar circumstances. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Joan and Rose Brooks in the years to come."
Morrisey’s squad has volunteered with the Rose Brooks Center for the past four years. Individual players have assisted in donation drives and service projects at Rose Brooks.
"The Rockhurst women are a phenomenal group of people," said Joan Dougherty, manager of volunteers and community support at Rose Brooks. "They are very close to our hearts."
Today, Rose Brooks Center offers an emergency shelter for up to 75 women and children, a violence prevention program in 37 schools, a hospital advocacy program located in six area hospitals, a children’s therapeutic program, court advocacy, outreach counseling and a Transitional Housing Program.
