Softball: Hawks drop pair of one-run games at Missouri-St. Louis
The Rockhurst Hawks were limited to one run and eight hits in dropping a pair of one-run games at Missouri-St. Louis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday.
Missouri-St. Louis scored in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 2-1. RU catcher Lindsey Williams tied the game with a home run in the top of the seventh. Senior Heather Robertson took the loss.
The Tritons won the second game, 1-0, with a run in the sixth off Rockhurst starter Emily Dye, who only allowed four hits.
Rockhurst, 19-19 and 9-13 in the GLVC, needs to defeat Missouri S&T twice on Sunday in Rolla to earn a berth in the GLVC Tournament.
Senior shortstop Kelli Vanderwell singled home the winning run in the eighth inning to give the Rockhurst Hawks a 2-1 victory over Drury in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at RU's Loyola Park.
Vanderwell's infield hit scored freshman Kayla Thomas, who opened the inning with a double to right field. Junior third baseman Kristen Benes sent Thomas to third with a single to center.
Thomas and Benes both finished with two hits. Thomas tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Robertson went the distance to win her eighth game of the season. She only allowed six hits and did not issue any walks. The only run she gave up was unearned.
In the second game, the Hawks scored three runs in the first inning and held off the Panthers for a 3-2 victory.
Robertson drove in two runs with a single. Senior Katie Flott brought home what turned out to be the winning run with a two-out single.
Dye struck out eight while giving up nine hits to get the win.
