Men's Tennis: Hawks drop opening match in NCAA tourney
The seventh-seeded Rockhurst Hawks suffered a 5-0 loss to second-seeded Northwood in their opening round match in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Tournament Thursday in Midland, Mich.
Rockhurst's doubles team of Paul Ravkin and Arturo Baravalle nearly pulled out a victory in No. 1 doubles. Northwood survived three match points to win the match by a 9-8 score. The Timberwolves won the tiebreaker 10-8.
The Hawks also fell in No. 2 and 3 doubles by identical 8-5 scores. Senior Garrett Fischer and freshman Zach Newell both lost in the singles competition. The other four singles matches were unfinished.
"We came out with a strong desire to win the match," said Rockhurst coach Carolina Mayorga-Perry. "We were just a couple of points from making it a closer match. Overall, we played well though we are disappointed."
