Men's Basketball: Hawks hold off Benedictine, 65-57
Junior center John Torson keyed a 9-0 run late in the second half to lead the Rockhurst Hawks to a 65-57 victory over Benedictine in exhibition action Tuesday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House. Box Score
Torson's layup with 7:15 left in the game broke a 47-all tie. Senior forward Jon-Erik Price made a layup, Torson hit a jumper and sophomore guard Tyler Knust drilled a 3-point shot to give the Hawks a 56-47 lead with 5:18 remaining.
Benedictine never got closer than seven in the final five minutes. The Ravens rallied from a 29-22 halftime to take their first lead since early in the game at 42-40 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Torson led the Hawks with 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Price and senior guard Jordan Rider scored nine points each. All of Rider's points came on three 3-point baskets in the first half.
Knust finished with eight points and three assists. Freshman forward Jake Meyer collected seven points, six assists and three steals.
Rockhurst shot 53.2 percent from the field (25 of 47), while the Ravens made 21 of 49 field goals (42.9 percent). The Hawks also won the rebound battle, 31-27.
The Hawks play their final exhibition game Saturday at Wichita State in a 7:05 p.m. tipoff at Koch Arena.
