Men's Basketball: Hawks upset second-ranked Bellarmine, 79-68

Junior guard Aaron Hill scored 26 points to lead the Rockhurst Hawks to a 79-68 victory over second-ranked Bellarmine in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The victory moves Rockhurst, 10-6, into first place in the GLVC West Division with a 6-2 record. Bellarmine, 14-2, is tied for first in the GLVC East Division at 5-2.

The Hawks jumped out to a 36-26 halftime lead while hitting nine three-pointers. Hill made all five of his three-pointers in the first half.

Rockhurst held off a Bellarmine rally down the stretch while hitting 11-of-14 free throws in the final minute and a half.

Senior forward Alden Smith finished with 17 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. He only played four minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls.

Junior forward Jake Meyer posted 12 points and three steals. Senior frontliners Brent Thome and Drew Martin combined for 15 points and 10 rebounds.

On Thursday, the 18th-ranked Northern Kentucky Norse shot 53.3 percent from the field on the way to an 85-73 victory over the Hawks at Mason-Halpin.

Meyer led the Hawks with 18 points on five-of-eight shooting. He was four-of-six from behind the three-point line.

Junior guards Jazz Neal (13) and Hill (12) also scored in double figures. The pair were limited to two three-pointers on 12 attempts.

Thome finished with a team-high six rebounds. Smith collected nine points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Rockhurst shot 41.7 percent from the field (25 of 60) and made eight of 25 three-pointers (32.0 percent). The Hawks lost the rebound battle, 40-26, as the Norse scored 19 second-chance points.

The Hawks play at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and at Southern Indiana on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
