
Baseball: Hawks eliminated by Grand Valley State in NCAA Midwest Regional
The Rockhurst Hawks were eliminated from the NCAA Midwest Regional, falling to 11th-ranked Grand Valley State 10-8 in 12 innings Friday at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Grand Valley State rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the sixth inning to force extra innings. The Lakers scored three runsin the top of the 12th and got the final out with the tying run on second in the bottom of the 12th.
The Hawks, 35-23, finished with 17 hits. Senior shortstop Steve Braun, senior second baseman Jordan Myers and senior catcher Tyler Rzepka had three hits apiece. Myers, Rzepka and junior DH Mike Walczuk each drove in two runs.
Walczuk's two-run home run gave Rockhurst a 3-2 lead in the third. An RBI double by Myers and run-scoring single by Rzepka put the Hawks in front 6-2 in the fifth.
Junior Jason Brown, who was one out away from securing a Rockhurst victory in the ninth, took the loss.
On Thursday, the Hawks suffered an 8-4 loss to sixth-ranked Ashland (Ohio) on the first day of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
Ashland scored four runs in the fifth inning to grab an 8-3 lead. The Hawks were held to one run on four hits over the final four innings.
Braun led Rockhurst with three hits, including two doubles. Rzepka added two hits. Walczuk hit his seventh homer in the second for the Hawks.
Sophomore starter Jeremy Pope (7-4) took the loss after getting knocked out of the game in the second.
