Men’s Tennis: Hawks claim GLVC Championship

Rockhurst collected key wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles to knock off 16th-ranked Drury 5-1 and claim the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Tennis Championship on April 25 in St. Louis.

Rockhurst's Ben and Zach Newell posted an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Nahom Serekeberhan and Ivan Marevic to stake a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action. The Hawks claimed their second win in doubles play by default.

With two more victories secured by default at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Rockhurst's Arturo Baravalle secured the team win for the Hawks with a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Drury's Aleks Kacamakis at No. 1 singles.

The championship is the first for the Hawks since joining the GLVC in 2005 and marks the first defeat in the conference tournament by Drury.

Rockhurst coach Carolina Mayora-Perry received the GLVC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year award.

On Friday, Rockhurst swept Missouri-St. Louis, 5-0, and Southern Indiana, 5-0, on the opening day of the GLVC Tournament.

Ben Newell and senior Adam Bales won both of their singles matches on Friday. The Hawks also combined to post a 6-0 record in doubles.
