Men's Basketball: RU's Smith named GLVC Player of the Week
Rockhurst’s Alden Smith has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week. The senior forward led the Hawks to a pair of wins this past week.
Smith posted a combined 35 points, 21 rebounds and seven steals for the week. He ranks second in steals (2.2), seventh in rebounding (6.7) and eighth in scoring (15.0) in the GLVC.
In the Hawks' 95-81 win over Haskell at home on Saturday, Smith posted 18 points and 11 boards. He added 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 92-75 victory over William Jewell on Dec. 9.
Smith was 14-of-27 from the field, three-of 11 beyond the three-point line, and four-of-eight from the line. For the week, Smith averaged 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.5 steals per game.
Senior guard Aaron Hill led the Hawks with 23 points in RU's victory over Haskell. Hill scored 20 points in the second half on eight-of-12 shooting. He finished with five three-pointers and had five assists.
Senior guard Joshua Kwajah and senior forward Drew Martin each scored 13 points. Kwajah posted a team-high seven assists.
The Hawks led 51-42 at halftime and went on a 27-10 run in the second half to hold off the Indians. Rockhurst shot 49.3 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the foul line.
Martin joined Smith with a double-double against William Jewell. The senior forward scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, along with collecting five assists.
Junior guard Tyler Knust and Hill both finished with 15 points while combining for four three-pointers and nine assists.
The Hawks, 6-3, play Alaska Anchorage, 3-7, on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. CST in the AT&T Jamboree in Anchorage, Alaska. The game will feature Live Video Streaming: (http://www.greatnorthwest.tv)
Rockhurst was also scheduled to play Dowling (N.Y.) on Sunday in Anchorage. The game has been cancelled due to Dowling not being able to travel due to a major snowstorm in the Northeast.
