Tennis: Hawks receive ITA postseason awards
Rockhurst head coach Carolina Mayorga-Perry has been named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year for men's tennis by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Mayorga-Perry led the Hawks to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship and a No. 26 national ranking in her second season at Rockhurst. She also received the Coach of the Year award from the GLVC in men's tennis.
Two Rockhurst players also were honored by the ITA. Adam Bales received the Senior Player of the Year in the Midwest Region. Bales finished 16-5 in singles and 14-6 in doubles. Sophomore Ben Newell was chosen the ITA's Player to Watch in the Midwest Region. Newell went 21-3 in singles and teamed with his brother, Zach, to become the second-ranked doubles team in the Midwest Region with a 20-5 record.
Coach Mayorga-Perry's husband, Dustin Perry, was selected as the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year in the Midwest Region.
The Hawks, No. 3 in the region with a 19-7 record, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships. Sophomore Arturo Baravalle was ranked fifth in singles in the final ITA regional poll. Ben and Zach Newell were ranked second in the region in doubles.
The Rockhurst women, 18-12, finished 35th in country and third in the region in the final ITA national poll. Seniors Kandice Belanger (seventh) and Caitlin Buckley (15th) were both ranked in the final regional singles poll. Buckley and Hannah Lazenby ranked seventh in the region in doubles.
