Volleyball: Hawks fall to 11th-ranked Lewis in GLVC Tournament
Rockhurst's inspiring run in the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament came to a disappointing end Saturday night in Romeoville, Ill.
Top-seeded Lewis held off the fifth-seeded Hawks for a 3-1 victory in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament. The 11th-ranked Flyers, 30-3, advance to Sunday's finals against second-seeded Indianapolis.
Rockhurst (21-14) won the second set, 25-23, and led 23-20 in the third set. Lewis finished the set on an 8-3 run to win 28-26. The Flyers also came back from a 10-6 deficit to win the fourth set, 25-19.
Maggie McGovern led the Hawks with 14 kills. Nicci Hartley posted 11 kills and Katy Hernandez collected 10 kills. Emily Levy finished with nine kills and six blocks.
Alyssa Emerson totaled 36 assists and 14 digs. Andrea Schroeder and Milica Balandzic both had 14 digs. Lindsey Schwent added 13 digs.
On Friday, Rockhurst posted a 3-1 victory over fourth-seeded Northern Kentucky in the first round of the GLVC Tournament in Romeoville, Ill.
The Hawks handled the Norse in the first set, 25-20. Rockhurst never trailed in the set and reeled off an 8-3 run to close the set.
Rockhurst jumped out to an early lead in route to a 25-15 decision in the second set. Levy posted five kills in the set and Hernandez added three kills.
The Norse rebounded in the third set for a 25-15 victory. Rockhurst put the match away early in the fourth set and grinded out a 25-20 win. Hernandez posted six kills and Maggie McGovern added five kills in the set.
Levy and Hernandez each posted 11 kills. Maggie McGovern added 10 kills. Levy added six blocks, while Loretta McGovern posted a team-high nine blocks. Schroeder collected 12 digs and Emerson finished with 31 assists.
