As many of you are aware, our student resident hall network has been overwhelmed at times during the normal academic year due to virus storms and network worm attacks. The purpose of this solution is to prevent “infected” systems from gaining access to the network and infecting other systems. The result should be good, consistent network availability.
Please follow these instructions to gain network access. If you have problems, please contact the Computer Services Help Desk at x4357.
In order to use our network, even for Internet access, you will first need to authenticate. There is a machine scanning solution called the "Smart Enforcer" which will be required for all computers running Microsoft Windows Operating systems. The "Smart Enforcer" is software which will validate you and scan your machine for vulnerabilies. Once you have been verified as a trusted user and your computer is deemed "clean", you will be allowed normal access to the network. There are four major criteria for gaining access to the network. If you meet all four, you will be allowed access.
1) A valid network account.
2) Smart enforcer software.
3) Have all critical Microsoft patches installed for your Operating System.
4) Have McAfee Virusscan Enterprise 7.1.0 or McAfee Virusscan Enterprise 4.5.1 with the most current virus definitions. (We will provide this for you.)
We are implimenting this solution in all residence halls and on all wireless and open ports on the main campus.
Other Macintosh users and Linux users will have to use the solution only to authenticate to the network through a web browser.
