Hawks Win Conference Championship

The Rockhurst Hawks captured the 2008 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory over Northern Kentucky on Nov. 9 at Bourke Field.

Senior goalkeeper Chad Becker, who posted his 14th shutout of the season in the title game, was named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year. Statistically he ranked among the top three goalkeepers in the nation.

Becker joined two of his teammates, junior forward Tom Heinemann and senior defender Spencer Martens, on the All-GLVC first team. Junior midfielder Kyle Samuelson and senior defender Charlie Reitz were named to the second team, while third team honors went to senior defender Caleb Haydon.

Rockhurst’s Tony Tocco was named the GLVC Coach of the Year. He has guided the Hawks to four appearances in the NCAA Tournament since 2002 and is the winningest active collegiate soccer coach.

The Rockhurst women’s soccer team earned a ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history under coach Greg Herdlick.

Six Hawks received All-GLVC honors. Senior forward Lisa Schwarz and junior goalkeeper Alyssa Miller were named to the all-conference first team. Senior midfielder Katie Vogt and junior defender Tiffany Mitchell made second team. Senior midfielder Sarah Anderson and freshman defender Anna Alfonsin garnered third-team recognition.
