The Rev. Greg Boyle, S.J., nationally renowned for his work with gangs in Los Angeles, will present “Tattoos on the Heart: A Theology of Compassion and Kinship” as the William Rossner Visiting Scholar Lecture in Theology. Boyle’s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Convocation Center on the Rockhurst University campus, 54th Street and Troost Avenue.
Fr. Boyle founded Homeboy Industries, now the largest gang intervention program in the country, as a way to provide jobs and education to at-risk youth. The organization’s motto is “Nothing stops a bullet like a job.” In 2005, Fr. Boyle drew a large audience to Rockhurst when he shared personal stories of the lives touched by his organization’s work. Now he returns to discuss the theology of this ministry and how it allows one to find God through helping others.
A reception to kick-off the Rockhurst University Centennial will precede the lecture at 6 p.m. in Massman Hall. All are invited to this celebration featuring birthday cake and items highlighting Rockhurst’s rich history as Kansas City’s Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher education.
Boyle’s presentation is sponsored by Rockhurst’s Center for Arts and Letters. To register your attendance for this free lecture and the centennial reception, visit www.rockhurst.edu/100years or call 816-501-4828.
