Rockhurst University will introduce a new bachelor of arts in criminal justice program with classes starting in the fall 2010 semester. Organizers believe it will be the only criminal justice program in the region that requires students to complete a semester-long internship and assists them in finding one.
Rockhurst has formed a community advisory board comprising professionals in a number of fields related to criminal justice to provide expertise in shaping the program’s curriculum and to help place students in the internship, which will take place in their senior year. Community agency leaders, the Kansas City Police Department, the Department of Justice, the FBI, corrections professionals and judges are all represented on the board.
“Rockhurst will be able to offer a unique perspective on the study of criminal justice because it will be offered in the framework of Jesuit education, which emphasizes social justice and service,” said Jeffrey Breese, Ph.D., dean of the school of graduate and professional studies.
Students will learn about the many aspects of the nation’s complex criminal justice system, while gaining a strong background in the liberal arts. The program is designed to prepare students for professional careers in traditional law enforcement fields such as corrections, courts, police and probation; for administrative and management positions in the field of criminal justice and law enforcement; and for opportunities in law and paralegal occupations.
Students also will be able to select criminal justice as a minor and will have the option to pursue a paralegal studies certificate.
