Visiting Scholar Presents Views on Catholic Philosophy, LeadershipFebruary 1, 2011
Former Gonzaga University President the Rev. Robert Spitzer, S.J., whose academic specialties include the philosophy of science and organizational ethics, will present “Inspiration, Philosophy and Leadership: A Catholic Perspective” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in Mabee Theater, Sedgwick Hall, on the Rockhurst University campus.
Spitzer is president and founder of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith in Irvine, Calif., and the Spitzer Center for Ethical Leadership in Ann Arbor, Mich. The former is dedicated to showing the close connection between faith and reason in contemporary astrophysics, philosophy, and historical study of the New Testament. The latter is dedicated to personal and cultural transformation that supports principle-based ethics and leads to noble and enduring success.
Spitzer’s lecture will address the intersection of a Roman Catholic approach to philosophy and the principles of good leadership. He will draw on his varied professional and scholarly background, which includes the presidency of Gonzaga University from 1998-2009, where he led the efforts to build 20 new facilities, increased the student population by 75 percent, raised more than $200 million for scholarships and capital projects, and significantly increased the faith, service, ethics, and leadership programs.
Spitzer has taught at Saint Louis University, Seattle University and Georgetown University. He has written on topics ranging from organizational leadership to proofs of God’s existence.
