In her role as Dean of the Helzberg School of Management, Cheryl McConell has overseen significant growth in all graduate programs and increased engagement with the business community and regional organizations.  Prior to becoming dean, McConnell was a professor of accounting, faculty chair of the Helzberg School of Management and chair of the Rockhurst University faculty senate.  Her primary academic areas of focus are auditing, fraud examination and financial accounting.  Her research interests include higher education, accounting education, assessment and course design.


McConnell has received numerous awards including the 2011 Rockhurst University Faculty of the Year award.  Previous awards include the Helzberg School of Management Perfect Professor Award, the Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Rockhurst University Excellence in Teaching Award.


A graduate of Wichita State University, McConnell earned her Master of Professional Accountancy degree and Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in accounting.  She is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Fraud Examiner and is currently earning her Ph.D. in Higher Education from St. Louis University.


McConnell has published or presented more than 70 articles, paper or workshops on areas such as course design, student reading strategies, accreditation and assessment, contextualized critical thinking and research methodologies for examining student learning.  She is currently investigating gender differences in graduate business school enrollment trends.
