Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra: Franz Joseph Haydn and Francesco DuranteSt. Francis Xavier Catholic Church
Sunday, October 20, 2013 @ 7 p.m.
Mass in a Time of War by Franz Joseph Hayden has been selected as the centerpiece of the Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra's season opener. Hayden's composition is considered one of the most colorful and exhilarating sacred choral masterpieces ever written. Composed in 1796, Hayden and his Austrian countrymen were sharing a collective unease over the threatening advances of Napolean's invading forces, thereby inspiring the composition's name.
Also on the program is Francesco Durante's Vespro Breve (Short Vespers). Durante (1684-1755) was recognized as one of Naples' leading composers in the first half of the 18th centruy. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he chose sacred music instead of opera as his primary focus of composition.
Live Program Notes begin at 6:15 p.m. Concert tickets are available through the Central Ticket office at 816-235-6222, online or at the performance.
