Generous friends have made gifts and bequests
to establish the following permanent scholarship
funds. Students automatically are considered
for these scholarships when they complete the
FAFSA and file a Student Aid Report (SAR) in
the Financial Aid Office.
The Paul D. Arend Scholarship was
created through the estate of Paul Arend. Mr.
Arend was associated with Rockhurst for more
than 35 years, as student, teacher, and Registrar.
The William F. Bartholome Scholarship,
established by friends in 1972, in honor of a
25-year administrator of Rockhurst, to provide
assistance to students, preferably from large
families.
The Southwestern Bell Foundation Scholarship is
awarded to Rockhurst students from the geographical
area served by Southwestern Bell corporationÑMissouri,
Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma or TexasÑwith preference
to students majoring in computer science, mathematics
or accounting.
The Edward Bessenbacher Scholarship,
established by Jim Bessenbacher and his sister,
Helen, from the estate of their father, Edward,
for students who meet the requirements for admission
to Rockhurst.
The Edward L. Biersmith III Scholarship,
founded by this 1963 alumnus and his mother,
Helen Kramer Biersmith, for students majoring
in philosophy.

Scholarships are available to business majors or those planning to major

The Dr. Joseph F. Bredeck Memorial
Scholarship, founded by his family
to honor a distinguished health commissioner
of St. Louis, Mo., 1933-1948.
The John W. Breidenthal Memorial Scholarship,
established by his wife, a member of the Board
of Regents, to honor this outstanding Kansas
banker and civic leader, provides financial
assistance to help students achieve a good
college education.
The James E. Burke Scholarship,
founded by the family of James E. Burke in
1998 to honor him.
The Mary Therese Byrne Puchi and Dr.
Joseph B. Byrne, Sr. Scholarship Fund,
established by her parents, Dr. Joseph B.
Byrne '37 and Katherine Byrne, together with
her husband, Mr. Edmundo Puchi, her children,
Eddie and Katherine, and her friends. The
scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic
accomplishment to young women attending Rockhurst.
The George B. Byrnes Scholarship,
established by this former Rockhurst student
in appreciation for the support given him by
the Jesuits and his classmates of the Depression
years.
Tommy Joe Caenen Memorial Scholarship,
funded by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Caenen in
memory of their son, for seniors in medical
or legal pre-professional study with preference
to qualifying evening program students.
The Louetta M. Cowden Scholarships,
established in her memory by the trustees of
the Louetta M. Cowden Foundation.
Critical Investments Fund,
established in 1995 to provide educational
assistance for non-traditional women students
who have experienced disadvantages in the pursuit
of their education. Candidates should be aware
of the value of, and have a commitment to,
community responsibility.
Honorary Directors Rod J. Cyr Fund,
created in 1998 by Rod Cyr, a member of the
Honorary Directors Association. Scholarship
funds are awarded in the same manner as other
Honorary Directors Scholarship funds.

The Edith and Harry Darby
Scholarships were established by the
Edith and Harry Darby Foundation to provide
assistance to students who exemplify academic
excellence and leadership qualities. Preference
to students in their junior and senior years.
The Graham Davis Memorial Scholarship,
created in memory of Mr. Davis, an '89 MBA
graduate and PT student at the time of his
death. The scholarship is for non-traditional
students enrolled in the Physical Therapy Program.
The Ilus W. Davis Fund, initiated
through grants of this former mayor of Kansas
City, Mo., member of the Rockhurst University
Board of Trustees and Regents, for student
scholarships or as directed by the Trustees.
The Mary A. Declerk Memorial Scholarship,
established by a bequest, is to assist deserving
students without reference to their grades.
The Al and Margaret Denzer Scholarship was
established by their five children and other
family members as a lasting memorial to their
love of Rockhurst University. Preference is
for assisting students majoring in accounting
and economics.
The Thomas F. Denzer, S.J., Endowed
Scholarship for students of Economics
was established in 1998 by an initial gift
from the Rockhurst University Library Guild
to honor Fr. Denzer, who taught economics
at the University for many years.
The James R. Dierks Scholarship,
created by a bequest from this 1937 alumnus,
is to assist Rockhurst University students
in obtaining a Rockhurst University education.
The Francis McDonnell Dierks and Margaret
Muser Dierks Scholarship, funded
by a bequest of Mr. Dierks, an alumnus, and
gifts of Mrs. Dierks, in support of deserving
Rockhurst students. The William C. Doyle
Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of
Rev. William C. Doyle, S.J., who taught at
Rockhurst University for 45 years, assists
deserving mathematics and physics majors.
The J. Ernest Dunn Memorial Fund,
founded by Mrs. Rose Dunn to honor a charter
member of the Rockhurst Regents, provides grants
to worthy students, with special consideration
given to Latino-American students.
The Donna Edell Scholarship,
established by her husband, Jack Shumway, for
students working in the field of natural sciences,
having financial need, and having academic
merit.
The G. Berenice Elders Scholarship,
established by a bequest to honor her parents,
Dr. and Mrs. H. Will Elders. The Executive
Fellows Nonprofit/Minority Scholarship,sponsored
by the alumni of the Executive Fellows Program
and Rockhurst University, is available to men
and women working in the greater Kansas City
metropolitan area, whose employers are unable
to pay the tuition.
The Anthony Fasenmyer Scholarship,
founded by A.C. Fasenmyer III to honor the
memory of his father.
The Carl Ferris Scholarship is
provided by Carl R. Ferris, M.D. and friends
for the benefit of nursing students.

The T. J. Fleming Scholarship,
established by his wife in memory of this longtime
friend and honorary director of Rockhurst College,
assists deserving students.
The Arthur A. Forster Scholarship,
established by this member of the first class
at Rockhurst University.
The Friedl Scholarship, founded
by Louis B. McGee in honor of the Rev. John
C. Friedl, S.J., for students majoring in industrial
relations or social sciences.
The Friedl-Kies Scholarship,
established by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bonfils for
students who are members of labor unions or
are studying Industrial Relations.
The May S. Geiger Scholarship Fund,
established by gifts and a bequest of a longtime
friend of Rockhurst Unversity to aid worthy
students.
The Dr. Joseph P. Glas Scholarship,
a science scholarship award, was established
by yhis 1960 alum. Golden Hawks Scholarship,
created by Rockhurst alumni who graduated at
least 50 years ago. The scholarship aids students
who encounter financial difficulties during
their enrollment at Rockhurst.
The Ralph L. Gray Memorial Scholarship,
established by his wife, honoring this 41-year
member and president of the Honorary Directors
Association, member of the Regents, civic leader
and former chairman of Armco Steel.
The William Green Memorial Scholarship
in Industrial Relations, founded
to honor the former president of the American
Federation of Labor.
The Michael J. Hardy Memorial Scholarship,
established by his family and friends in memory
of Mike Hardy, a Rockhurst University student
and rugby team member.
The William Randolph Hearst Foundation
Scholarship, established for deserving
Rockhurst students.
Thomas F. Heitlinger Scholarship Established
in 1998 Rockhurst University alumnus, Louis
J. Heitlinger to honor his brother, Thomas,
also a Rockhurst alumnus, who died at a young
age. This fund benefits needy, deserving English
majors with minimum 3.2 GPA.
The Anthony J. Heydon Memorial Scholarship,
established by his wife and friends in honor
of this former investment banker and Honorary
Director of Rockhurst.
The Mark B. and Patrick M. Higgins
Memorial Fund provides grants to
worthy students of average ability, with
particular consideration given to members
of Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity.
The Hilke Scholarship, in
memory of the Rev. George C. Hilke, S.J., director
of the Rockhurst Alumni Association from 1944
to 1961.

The Robert F. Hoefer
Memorial Fund honors this 1953 alumnus
and Trustee and provides financial assistance
to students with special consideration given
to those interested in finance or business
administration.
Honorary Directors Association Scholarships,
provided through the perpetual memberships
established by more than 320 persons in their
own names or as memorials to former directors.
The J. Frank Hudson Memorial Scholarship,
established by his wife in honor of the first
chairman of the Rockhurst Regents and chairman
of the university's first major fund drive.
The scholarship assists students toward careers
in business.
The Josephine Hudson Scholarship,
funded by this charter member of the Library
Guild, provides tuition assistance to deserving
students.
The Thomas Francis Imbs Scholarships,
established by his family in memory of the
father of a member of the Rockhurst Jesuit
community.
The Jesuit Community Scholarship Fund assists
needy students with preference given to minority
students.
The John M. and Mary A. Joyce Scholarship,
established in memory of his parents by John
M. Joyce Jr., a 1925 alumnus, to assist future
Rockhurst students to obtain a Catholic, Jesuit
education.
The Mr. and Mrs. Simon C. Kelly Memorial
Scholarship, funded by a bequest
of Agnes C. Kelly in recognition of her nephew,
the Rev. Francis J. Carey, S.J., to benefit
Rockhurst University students who are related
to members of the Jesuit community.
The Leo J. Kelley Scholarship,
for needy students, with a preference for student
athletes.
The Dr. Samuel J. Kennedy Fund,
established by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity
to honor their moderator, gives financial assistance
with preference to eligible students who are
members of SAE.
The Kieffer Scholarship,
founded by Miss Catherine Shore in memory of
the Rev. Eugene C. Kieffer, S.J.
The Harry B. Kies Memorial Scholarship,
established by his family, Rockhurst faculty
and former students, gives testimony to the
esteem in which this 42-year professor was
held. A co-founder of the Institute of Social
Order and professor of history, Mr. Kies taught
and was an exemplary influence on Rockhurst
students.
The Kirwan-Hartigan Memorial Scholarship,
established in memory of Francis and Clara
Louise Kirwan, to assist worthy students.

The Knipscher Chemistry
Scholarship, founded to honor the
memory of the Rev. John K. Knipscher, S.J.,
founder of the chemistry department.
The Robert F. Kuhnlein Scholarship,
in memory of an alumnus and member of the Rockhurst
Regents. The Dr. Thomas A. Kyner Memorial Fund,
established in 1970 by bequest of a member
of the Rockhurst Honorary Directors, will provide
financial assistance to more than 25 students
each year.
The William F. and James B. Laughlin
Memorial Scholarship, created in
1997 by Eugene Laughlin to honor his brothers,
William and James. The award assists deserving
full-time juniors or seniors in the School
of Management who demonstrate the need for
financial assistance and who meet the Rockhurst
criteria for academic scholarships. The intent
of the scholarship is to assist students
to receive an excellent education in the
area of Business Administration.
The Max Leupold Memorial Scholarship,
created by bequest of this Kansas City banker,
civic leader and Honorary Director of Rockhurst.
He served as a Senior Ambassador for 10 years,
developing corporate support for Rockhurst
and its students.
The Robert L. Lueking Memorial Scholarship,
established by his father, Gus W. Lueking,
to honor this former Rockhurst student by providing
financial assistance to western Missouri students
with special interest in the fields of business,
accounting and economics.
The Mary Margaret Mangold Scholarship,
was created in 1996 to assist deserving graduates
of Bishop Miege High School of Shawnee Mission,
Kansas. Recipients must be enrolled full-time,
but financial need is not a criterion for selection.
Preference is given to incoming freshmen who
may later renew the scholarship. Preference
is given to students who pursue or who will
pursue the study of accounting.
The Mason Family Scholarship honors
Patrick W. Mason, 1921 alumnus and Rockhurst
University athletic coach, and members of the
Mason family who remained supportive of the
University and its students through many years.
The Henry J. Massman Sr. Scholarship continues
the interest in tuition assistance for needy
students to which Mr. Massman was dedicated.
As motivator for the building of Conway Hall,
Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse and 24-year president
of the Honorary Directors Association, he evidenced
his dedication to promoting Jesuit education.
The Clara Mart Scholarship for
nursing students is provided by the Marley
Foundation in memory of Clara Mart. The Frank
and Margaret McGee Scholarship, established
by Thomas F. McGee in honor of his parents.
The Chester C. and Addiebell Michael
Scholarship, provided by the estate
of a 27-year member of the Honorary Directors.
The James E. and Jane G. Millard Memorial
Scholarship, established by their
children in memory of their parents' love
and support of Catholic, Jesuit education.
Preference will be given to a descendant
of the Millards, then a Catholic student.
The Bernadette and Richard Miller
Scholarship, a grant to be awarded
annually to full-time students who have spent
their prior summer doing voluntary social
service for the less fortunate and needy.

The Mr. and Mrs. Robert
W. Miller Memorial Scholarship, founded
by the family. Mr. Miller was a 30-year member
of the Rockhurst Evening faculty and Mrs. Miller
was a member and president of the Rockhurst
Circle.
The William Moore Scholarship,
founded by Mrs. Genevieve Moore in memory of
her husband.
The Harry F. Murphy Memorial Scholarship honors
this 1925 alumnus, Honorary Director, lawyer
and judge. It was established by his family
and friends.
The Lucie Jane Desloge McAnany Scholarship,
a permanent trust established by one of the
first women attending evening courses in the
1930s, to assist deserving students to obtain
a Catholic college education.
The Robert A. McCune Memorial Fund,
established by his family and friends to honor
this former Rockhurst faculty member, to provide
financial assistance to outstanding students
in business and accounting.
The Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. McDonnell
Scholarship Fund, to assist deserving
students, particularly those evidencing an
interest in engineering.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. McDonnell Scholarship -
benefits deserving Rockhurst University science
students who are majoring in or who have an
interest in engineering. Established by Mr.
and Mrs. Robert McDonald.
The Thomas McGee Scholarship,
founded by Louis B. McGee in honor of his father,
Thomas McGee, for students majoring in business
administration.
The Laurence R. O'Donnell Memorial
Scholarship, for deserving students,
honoring a charter member of the Rockhurst
Regents, a dedicated friend of education
and Jesuits.
The Sebastian Patti Scholarship,
founded by Mrs. Patti in memory of her husband,
for students preparing for a career in engineering.
The Edward T. Powers Scholarships,
founded by Miss Marie F. Powers in memory of
her parents, Amanda and Edward Powers.
The Regular Investors in Rockhurst
Scholarships, established by members
of the Alumni Association from a portion
of their regular annual support, providing
tuition assistance for young men and women
who are following in their footsteps.
The Mr. and Mrs. John A. Reid Scholarship
Fund was established by Mr. and
Mrs. George Reid in honor of his parents.

The Robert A. Ridgway Scholarship Fund,
founded by Mrs. Ridgway in memory of her husband.
Dr. Sam E. Roberts Fund, established in his memory
by a bequest of his wife, Mary, a member of the
Regents.
The Rockhurst Circle Scholarship,
established as a permanent fund in 1972 from
projects and gifts of the first (1927) women's
organization of the University - the mothers,
wives and friends of students.
The Justin X. Schmitt, S.J., Memorial
Scholarship, instituted by friends
and the Jesuit community to honor this 26-year
member of the Rockhurst faculty, professor
and former chairman of the Department of Theology.
Thomas J. Savage, S.J. Scholarship Established
in 1999 in honor of former Rockhurst University
President Thomas J. Savage, S.J. to assist deserving
students from the Kansas City area.
Dr. Reva R. Servoss Endowed Chemistry
Prize, established in 1996 by Dr.
Servoss, who taught in the Rockhurst chemistry
department for more than 30 years. Her endowed
fund is dedicated to young women who, like
Dr. Servoss, through desire and hard work,
seek to appreciate and master the study of
chemistry. Along with her years of teaching
and mentoring, Dr. Servoss offers this endowed
prize as a legacy to be passed to future generations.
Preference is given to female sophomores who
have a declared major in chemistry. The chemistry
department faculty can provide further information
regarding the selection process for the Servoss
Prize.
The Agnes Shirk Scholarship,
created by her sons, Paul and James, in recognition
of her association with Rockhurst from 1924 to
1991 and her strong belief in Catholic education.
The Sosland Foundation Scholarship provides
tuition assistance to needy students showing
academic potential with special preference to
Hispanic students. This permanent fund serves
as a source of encouragement and support of students
who otherwise would be unable to achieve their
quest for improvement through a college education.
The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order
of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of
Malta Scholarship Fund, established
by Mr. Thomas J. McCune in honor of The Order.
Tuition assistance is provided to worthy students
practicing the Catholic faith with preference
to majors in philosophy and theology. The Edna
Spencer Scholarship is provided in the memory
of Edna Spencer for nursing students.
The William J. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship,
established by his family and friends to honor
this 28-year Honorary Director and Kansas City
businessman.

The Sutherland Memorial Scholarship,
honoring Alexander G. Sutherland.
Tau Kappa Epsilon Alumni Memorial Scholarship,
established to provide educational assistance
to a worthy Rockhurst student and active member
in good standing with the Kappa Nu chapter of
the International Fraternity.
The James I. Threatt Scholarship,
created in honor of a well-known Kansas City
civic leader. Preference is given to minority
students from an urban background with a B+ or
higher high school average who intend to pursue
a full-time course of study in business. Recipients
should be interested in giving special consideration
to the study of, or career intent in, public
administration or urban development.
The Ted Tobin Scholarship,
created through the estate of Mr. Tobin, a former
Senior Ambassador for Rockhurst, who died in
1993.
The Bernard G. Tonquest and Thomas E.
Tonquest Memorial Scholarship, established
by gifts and bequests to honor two students
during the beginning days of Rockhurst, provides
assistance to deserving students today.
The Charles Truitt Scholarship,
established in 1994 by the family of Mr. Truitt
to honor the memory of this gifted business leader
and family man. The fund is dedicated to young
men and women who seek to change their own lives
through desire and hard work. The scholarship
is for current juniors or seniors enrolled in
the School of Management, in good standing, who
graduated from a high school in Kansas or Missouri.
The student also must be currently employed in
a paid position that requires a minimum of 20
hours per week, have a history of extracurricular
activities and involvement, and have sufficient
financial need. Candidates must include an essay
with their application.
The Truman Scholarship, founded
by Louis B. McGee in honor of President Harry
S Truman on his eightieth birthday for students
majoring in political science or social sciences.
The Fred P. Turner Memorial Scholarship honors
this member of the Rockhurst faculty who shared
his banking and investment experience in a very
practical way. Grants from this scholarship are
made to students who express the intention of
obtaining an undergraduate degree in business,
management, economics, accounting or related
subjects and evidence some need for tuition assistance.
The Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph J. Valenta
Scholarship, established by their
family to recognize exceptionally capable graduates
of Saint Louis University High School.

The Maurice
Van Ackeren Scholarship, initiated
in 1966 by the Rockhurst Circle in recognition
of the fifteenth anniversary of the Rev. Maurice
E. Van Ackeren, S.J., as president of Rockhurst
University.
The Frank Vanost Scholarship,
in memory of this 1961 alumnus to provide assistance
to fatherless students; founded by a friend
and classmate.
William Volker Scholarships,
provided by a grant from the fund established
in 1932 by Mr. Volker, a successful Kansas
City businessman and generous philanthropist.
The Vowells Family Scholarship,
created in 1997 by Mr. Joseph Vowells in honor
of Brother Henry Poiner Vowells, S.J., Henry
Poiner Vowells, Joseph Poiner Vowells, and
John Joseph Vowells, S.J. The intent of the
scholarship is to assist needy Catholic students
who are enrolled full-time and academically
qualified to attend Rockhurst. The award is
renewable.
The Leo F. and Jean H. Weber Memorial Scholarship was
established as a memorial by his family, friends
and grants from the Bayvet Division of Miles
Laboratories where he was director of finance
and administration. Mr. Weber was an alumnus
of Rockhurst University with an MBA degree.
The Margaret Whalen Scholarship,
founded by bequest of Mrs. Margaret Whalen.
Wiesner Family Scholarship Established
1998 by Jack Wiesner, 1960 Rockhurst University
alumnus, to benefit needy students with a minimum
GPA of 2.0 The John White Scholarship, a fund
for deserving young people from farming or
rural communities.
The Helen F. Wiggins Scholarship,
established by her husband, Dr. John M. Wiggins,
her son, Senator Harry Wiggins '53, friends
and relatives to honor a lady who recognized
the value of a Catholic, Jesuit education and
who served as an example of a Christian wife
and parent that others might emulate. The grants
from this scholarship provide assistance to
students who otherwise would not be able to
obtain a Rockhurst education.
The Helen E. Williams Memorial Scholarship was
established by a bequest and the direction
of her son, Rev. William W. Williams, S.J.,
to provide tuition assistance to Rockhurst
students in financial need, with preference
given to students of Mexican ancestry.
The Victor H. Zahner Scholarship Fund was
established by a bequest from Mr. Zahner and
provides financial aid for students in need.
Rockhurst University Black Alumni
Club Scholarship Application Process The
goal of the Black Alumni Club is to award
three scholarships annually. Amount of each
scholarship will be based on financial need
and academic achievement.
