Purpose
The purpose of the professional semester is to provide pre-service teachers with guided experiences of actual teaching. These experiences include responsibility for the preparation, implementation and evaluation of curriculum and instruction. Requirements

  • Undergraduate students must pass all four sections of the College Basic Academic Subjects examination. Students usually take the exam at the beginning of their sophomore year after completing both ED 1320 and PY 1000.
  • Undergraduate students must have a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Graduate students must have a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale
  • Students must have a grade of C or better in all education courses as well as courses connected to a particular concentration area.
  • Students must apply and be formally accepted into the Rockhurst University Department of Education.
  • Students must submit the professional semester application packet.

Professional Semester Application Packet
To apply for the professional semester, you must download and print* the following application and submit all materials to VA 303A.

  • Professional Semester Application (24KB PDF *).
  • Professional semester resume (three copies)
  • Professional semester autobiography (three copies)
  • Three copies of all student transcripts prior to the professional semester

School districts will use the resume and autobiography to match the professional semester candidate with a qualified cooperating teacher. The Office of Career Services is available to help you with your resume.

The professional semester autobiography should be a thoughtful essay of no more than 1,000 words that gives an overview of yourself, your goals and your reasons for pursuing a specific area of content. Each essay should include four distinct parts:

  • Academic Biography
  • Philosophy/Professional Goals
  • Reasons for Content Area
  • Outlook Goals
