Faculty Orientation
Building Information Literacy into the Curriculum
Presented by Kim B. Cullinan, M.Ed., MLIS
Head of Public Services
Introduction
One of the missions of the
Rockhurst University librarians is to collaborate
with faculty so that information literacy
competencies are incorporated into each
college course at the appropriate
level so that students learn the skills
to become lifelong learners.
Standards and Guidelines
Information Literacy competencies,
as described in the Association of College
and Research Libraries Information
Literacy Competency Standards for Higher
Education enable the student to:
- Determine the extent of information
needed
- Access the needed information effectively
and efficiently
- Evaluate information and its sources critically
- Incorporate selected information into one’s
knowledge base
- Use information effectively to accomplish
a specific purpose
- Understand the economic, legal, and social
issues surrounding the use of information,
and access and use information ethically and
legally
Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with librarians so that their students are able to successfully use the collection of the Greenlease Library. The document
Information Literacy for Faculty and Administrators gives a good overview of how to approach information literacy.
