Information Desk

The Information desk is the research center of the library. It is staffed during the day by the Reference librarians and on evenings and weekends by the Evening/Weekend Supervisors. Evening/Weekend Supervisors are paraprofessional staff who have training in basic reference information. Patrons needing in-depth reference information should contact Kim Cullinan, Head of Public Services. Patrons can call 816-501-4188 to reach a librarian at the Information Desk.

Research Guides

The library has developed a series of Research Guides and links to Internet sources to assist patrons in using the library collection. Patrons should use these guides as a beginning point in their research. The librarians can offer more in-depth assistance with research topics.

Online Catalog

The Rockhurst University library is now part of the MOBIUS consortium.

Connect to the online catalog here. Help in using the catalog is available through the online catalog. Also ask for assistance at the Information Desk.

The online catalog offers a wide variety of search options besides the basic options of searching by author name, item title, or subject of interest.

The online catalog can:

  • Indicate if a book, video, musical recording, etc., is part of the Rockhurst University library collection. This includes materials placed on reserve for courses by faculty;

  • Indicate if the item is available on the shelf or is currently checked out to a user;

  • Indicate if any of the other libraries in the online catalog have a specific item;

  • If you have a Rockhurst University library card and unique campus identification number:

    • Allow you to view your account to see what you have checked out, any fines on your account or items on request from other libraries;

    • Allows current Rockhurst University employees and students to request items directly from the other libraries in the MOBIUS consortium through Patron Initiated Borrowing;

    • Allows current Rockhurst University employees and students to checkout items directly from the other libraries in the MOBIUS consortium through Visiting Patron Borrowing;

Before you can view your Rockhurst University library account through the online catalog you must come into the library to set up your account or reactivate your account at the beginning of the semester..

Periodical Indexes And Abstracts

The term "periodical" means any publication that is published on some regular schedule, i.e., weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc. These include newspapers, general magazines, scholarly and professional journals.

To find newspaper, magazine or journal articles on a subject you must use a periodical index or abstract. Each periodical index covers a subject area, i.e., business, social sciences, etc. Some periodical indexes cover specific areas of a subject, i.e., chemistry, nursing, etc.

Most periodical indexes and abstracts are arranged in dictionary form with subject and author entries. Indexes will list basic information such as the author and title of the article, the journal or newspaper title and the volume number, page number and date of the journal. This type of information is known as the "citation" to the article. Abstracts will give short descriptions of the research emphasized in the article.

The library has many indexes and abstracts which cover a variety of subjects.

  • Some periodical indexes are only available in print; search the online catalog using this keyword search : type into the Search box "s:indexes or s:abstracts" (quotes not included), select "Title" from the Search and Sort drop down menu and select "RU Reference Collection" from the Specific Library Location drop down menu. Click on the Search button.
  • Other indexes are in an electronic versions in library databases. Select the appropriate database by topic area.

For complete information on available indexes and abstracts, consult the librarian at the Information desk on the main floor of the library, call 816-501-4188 for research assistance or Ask A Librarian for help by email.

How To Find Periodicals (Magazines, Journals And Newspapers)

After using a periodical index it will be necessary to locate the periodical which contains your article. In order to find a list of the periodicals in the library collection, see the Periodical Holdings List .

If you cannot find what you are looking for, be sure to ask the Librarian at the Information desk to help you. If our library does not own the journal that you need, the librarian will help you locate the journal in another library. You may then retrieve the article from that library yourself or through Interlibrary Loan.

Interlibrary Loan

Through cooperative agreements and regular Interlibrary loan channels we can provide a wealth of materials beyond our own collection by borrowing items from other libraries.

Interlibrary Loan services are available to current Rockhurst University students, staff and faculty, including those from the Research College of Nursing.

Interlibrary Loan services are NOT available to Alumni, Rockhurst Honorary Directors, Rockhurst Regents, Library Guild members or Board of Trustees.

To submit an electronic request go to the Interlibrary Loan page.

Library of Congress Subject Headings

The Greenlease Library uses the Library of Congress Subject Headings to assign subject terms to all materials in the online catalog. When using either catalog it is best to make sure you know the proper subject term to use before you search. If you do not know the correct subject terms you might not find the materials you want. The latest edition of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is a multi-volume set which lists all current subject terms. This set is kept at the Information desk.
