These search directories are not as large as the general search directories listed above, but the sites included are selected by humans and search results from these directories include annotations describing each search result. These are real time-savers for web searching. These are all favorites of the librarians on our staff.

Internet Scout Project

Not strictly a search directory, this well-respected site provides information about current and archived web sites reviewed in the editors' online weekly Scout Report. The searchable directory is the "Scout Report Archives".

A popular search engine that allows you to enter your search as a question and it attempts to find search results based on the unique words in your question. This search engine has a higher rate of returning irrelevant search results than most others.

All The Web (a.k.a. FAST)

This general search engine offers good advanced search options to narrow searches and increase relevancy in search results. It also provides searching for images and audio/visual files not normally available on general search engines. A library staff favorite!

Google

The largest and best general search engine available. It has advanced search options and allows searching for image and audio/visual files not normally available on general search engines. It also has it's own search directory. A library staff favorite!

iLOR

This general search engine has some unique features which allow the searcher to view individual web sites from their search results without losing their search result list, create a personal list from search results which may be e-mailed to the searcher and other fun things. It's powered by Google so it uses their index of web sites. A library staff favorite!

A visual search engine which uses mapping technology to show relationships between categories of web sites.
